A union leader hopes the Isle of Man Government will minimise job cuts despite losing millions of pounds in VAT cash in the next two years.

Steve Salter of Unite is seeking talks with new Chief Minister Allan Bell.

The revised VAT sharing agreement with the UK means the Island will receive £30m less this financial year and £50m less from next April.

Mr Salter hopes any cuts will be met by natural wastage and voluntary redundancy.

"We would like to know sooner rather than later if there is that potential there for redundancy," he said.

He added: "I think there may be a contraction in the size of the government workforce. Natural wastage would be one way of dealing with it, another way would be ask for voluntary redundancies.

"Certainly we want to avoid compulsory redundancies at all costs."
