Sainsbury's and Helical Bar have teamed up to redevelop a wharf site in the London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.

To be built on a 3.15 hectare site, the scheme features a 9,395 square metre supermarket to be occupied by Sainsbury's on the eastern half of the site, 731 square metres of café and restaurant space, 398 square metres of community space, and 472 residential apartments (of which 96 will be affordable) to be contained in a series of blocks designed by Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands.

The scheme is split into several parts with the taller units sitting along the riverfront alongside new cafes or restaurants with an additional footpath by the banks of the Thames.

The tallest tower is set to comprise of 17 floors and has been designed to appear visually similar in scale to Belvedere Tower at Chelsea Harbour. Excluding the spire, this has a height/width ratio of 1:2.3 which is almost identical to the proposed tallest at Fulham Wharf of 1:2.6.

To further split this up and add a feeling of slenderness to the scheme, Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands has created the impression of subdividing it into two connected vertical elements of 1:4.4 with horizontal louvres in between creating a slender border area.

Of primary importance will be the riverfront elevations. These have full height floor to ceiling glass with internal balconies and timber detailing. Providing a modicum of privacy for the residents will be opaque fritted glazing.

Further back from the river along Townmead Road and Willam Morris Way will be more human sized buildings to help it relate better to the surroundings with a greater industrial feel to their look. Taking this to an extreme, are the "houseplex" units with their pitched roofs, whilst part of the main supermarket will feature a retained façade.

The taller of the two towers standing at 319 metres. It is located in Tsuen Wan, one of the most sophisticated districts of Hong Kong. Originally proposed back in 1993 the first design saw a single much taller tower planned but due to flight path issues it was shrunk down and turned into a two tower project.
